Class Expectations and our class charter are established by the class during the first week of school.
We use Responsive Classroom approaches, which promotes the importance of the social curriculum as well as the academic curriculum. Part of this includes “logical consequences” for when children do not follow an expectation. Our goal is for children to learn from their mistakes. When an established expectation is not followed, a logical consequence is given such as “Take a Break”, “You Break it, You Fix it”, “Act of Apology” and “Loss of Privilege”. More information can be found at www.responsiveclassroom.org. We have also created a Highland School Responsive Classroom Blog. The blog provides helpful tips for parents to support Responsive Classroom at home. For more information please click http://highlandrcblog.weebly.com/.
My goal is to make the classroom a safe place for all children! I want all children to feel accepted in our classroom and school community. The action steps I will take to ensure that all children feel accepted include: 1. I will incorporate morning meeting activities such as a greeting, share and a community building activity such as “Just Like Me”, “Pop” and “Kindness Circle” to encourage acceptance and inclusion. 2. I will incorporate a closing circle to reflect on our learning, daily activities and problem solve, as needed. This will include activities such as a complement circle. 3. I will use reinforcing, reminding, and redirecting language posted in my room to encourage behavior that promotes acceptance and inclusion. 4. I will include mindfulness activities throughout our day. 5. We use the Yale Mood Meter and curriculum to support our social emotional learning.
